Song Recommendation: "Oath" by MONO
It's nice to see the return of not one but two legacy post-rock bands this year. Not that either Godspeed or MONO has been silent in recent years, but both bands dropping top-tier records within months of each other certainly helps offset a tiny part of the hellish reality in which we live. The title track on MONO’s record from June, “Oath,” is one of those rare musical gems: the post-rock “pop single.” In a different world, “Oath,” with its zippy four-minute runtime, propulsive tempo, and near-instant gratification of those big bombastic swells, would be a crossover hit equal to similar “hits” from Sigur Rós back in the early 2000s. Regardless, it’s a great track that kicks off a great record, and if you just need that particular euphoric boost that only instrumental post-rock can provide, then MONO has your number.
